A traffic jam is an ugly thing, but at the hands of Spanish artist Maider Lopez, a traffic jam art installation becomes strangely beautiful nestled in the foothills of Mount Aralar.

The artist asked for volunteers to participate in the traffic jam art installation via public announcements on newspapers, radios and flyers in September 2005. The result was 160 cars, approximately 425 people that participated in the 4-hour traffic jam. Volunteers directed traffic, served lunch and photographed and filmed the traffic jam from different angles.

“A traffic jam was caused in a place where there are normally none,” explains the artist. “The cars were distributed on arrival by color and position along the road, giving rise to a sort of absurd “Waiting for Godot” Sunday in the hills.”

Re-lights from artist Jerry Kott are stunning handmade lights and lamps created from recycled wine bottles. “I started experimenting with empty wine bottles simply because I had them and I like wine,” explains Kott.

Collecting the bottles is quite easy as fellow wine drinkers and art patrons save their bottles for Kott. “ I have been known to empty a few myself if a specific color is needed,” he explains from his farm in Pennsylvania. “I have a large array of bottles to choose from but do have limitations in combining the bottles for the lights because the diameters have to match.”

The Re-lights are created by hand-cutting bottles, polishing the edges, permanently creating the glass frosting and affixing the glass pieces together – all labor is done by hand. “The time involved varies by the amount of sections-color blocks combined to create each work,” Kott explains. “Obviously, the multi-stripe works are tedious in the amount of cutting and polishing but I believe that they are worth the effort.”

Located in the mediaeval village of Quinson, the Musée de Préhistoire responds to its context by combining modern construction techniques with local materials. ‘Folded’ into the landscape, the building’s lenticular plan is defined by a long drystone retaining wall that guides visitors into a cool, double-height foyer – reminiscent of the caves that the museum celebrates.

The building is multi-functional, including areas for academic study alongside a reference library and research laboratories. On the ground level, accessed from the foyer, a childrens teaching area reinforces the buildings social and educational programme, while its auditorium, capable of seating 100 people for lectures, can be used independently for village events. From the foyer, a curved ramp leads up to the first floor to begin the circular route around the museum display. Ambient light levels within the galleries are kept to a minimum and light is focused on the objects rather than the space. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a reconstruction of one of the caves in the Gorges du Verdon, which are inaccessible to the public. This is supplemented by dioramas showing hunting, fishing and other scenes from Stone Age life.
