Battle for the Parliament in Moldova
Protestors broke into the parliament building and ransacked the interior Tuesday after demonstrations turned violent. Here, a looter carries a television out of the parliament building.
The protests carried on into the night. Riot police restored order in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Protesters outside the looted and burning parliament building: Opposition supporters say Moldova, which is one of Europe’s poorest countries, has no future if the Communist Party stays in power.
Fighting broke out between protesters and police in the streets of the capital. Police responded with water cannon and tear gas.
The Interior Ministry said there had been 193 arrests and that around 96 police and 79 demonstrators had been injured.
